A massive gator weighing over 700 pounds (318 kilograms) and measuring nearly 12 feet (4 meters) long has been caught in South Florida. A spokeswoman for Jupiter Police says a trapper caught the unusually large gator near an office park Thursday after a business owner reported it. The reptile weighed nearly 750 pounds (340 kilograms) and is being taken to a gator farm in central Florida.

The department posted pictures of officers wrangling with the gator that said the following: This morning officers responded to an alligator call in the Jupiter Commerce Park area. This gator was almost 12 feet long and weighed about 750 pounds. He was carefully removed without harm from the area and relocated to a safe place.

The Sun Sentinel reports alligators are especially active in South Florida during warm weather. Their mating season runs from April through June. (Source)

I've heard of ones over 15 feet being caught.

Well, certainly no record BUT a big alligator - several Wiki Quotes below - appears that 19+ ft is the record length for an 'old' male - over the decades of visiting Kiawah and taking a LOT of swamp tours in Louisiana, I would say 10-12 ft would be about the longest gator seen for me. Dave :)

As with all crocodilians, and as opposed to many mammals where size eventually diminishes with old age, healthy American alligators may continue to expand throughout their lives and the oldest specimens are the largest. Very old, large male American alligators reach an expected maximum size of up to 4.6 m (15 ft 1 in) in length, weighing up to 453 kg (999 lb), while females reach a maximum of 3 m (9 ft 10 in).[14][15] On rare occasions, a large, old male may grow to an even greater length.[16][17]

During the 19th and 20th centuries, larger males reaching 5 to 6 m (16 ft 5 in to 19 ft 8 in) have been reported.[18] The largest reported individual size was a male killed in 1890 on Marsh Island, Louisiana, and reportedly measured at 5.84 m (19 ft 2 in) in length, but no voucher specimen was available, since the American alligator was left on a muddy bank after having been measured due to having been too massive to relocate.[17] If the size of this animal was correct, it would have weighed approximately 1,000 kg (2,200 lb).[19] In Arkansas a man killed an American alligator that was 4.04 m (13 ft 3 in) and 626 kg (1,380 lb).[20] The largest American alligator ever killed in Florida was 5.31 m (17 ft 5 in), as reported by the Everglades National Park.[21][22] The largest American alligator scientifically verified in Florida for the period from 1977 to 1993 was reportedly 4.23 m (13 ft 11 in) and weighed 473 kg (1,043 lb), although another specimen (size estimated from skull) may have measured 4.54 m (14 ft 11 in).[12]
