That corned beef looks like a mountain, not a sandwich.:)

In looking back at the third pic, that looks like the pastrami sandwich, but both are gigantic! The last few times that Susan & I visited either the Carnegie Deli or its 7th Ave competitor, the Stage Deli a few blocks down the street, we split a sandwich and ordered a much lighter item to share - went to the latter deli on our last Big Apple visit which had to be 5+ years ago because the Stage Deli close back in 2012 (see quote below). Dave :)

The Stage Deli, located on Seventh Avenue just two blocks from Carnegie Hall, was a well-known New York City delicatessen, patronized by numerous celebrities. It was first opened in 1937 by Russian immigrant Max Asnas.[1] The deli was known for Broadway-themed dishes including the "Mamma Mia!" sandwich.[2] It had other menu items named for the celebrities who have dined there, including Sarah Ferguson, Adam Sandler, Dolly Parton,[3] Martin Short,[4] and Ron Blomberg. The Stage Deli closed on November 29, 2012 (Source).

Hurricane Matthew - Devastation Along the Southeastern Atlantic USA Seaboard

The last 3 days or so, I've been watching the Weather Channel because of the effects of Hurricane Matthew - after massive destruction in the Caribbean w/ lost of over 800 lives in Haiti, the storm moved up the Atlantic Florida coast, through Georgia & the Carolinas, and extending into Virginia. Susan & I have visited virtually all of the coastal areas & cities being impacted by this horrible storm - I could show dozens of pics of where we have been (many in my travelogues) (e.g. St. Augustine, Jacksonville, Brunswick and the Sea Islands - including Jekyll - Savannah, Charleston (the their beaches), Myrtle Beach, Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach, Morehead City/Beaufort/New Bern), and further north).

Just a few pics - in Myrtle Beach, the Springmaid Pier (1060 feet and longest there) was demolished by the storm (first 2 images below - before and now); the second images of Water Street in Wilmington, NC - been there numerous times (one now flooded and the usual appearance) - Susan & I have schedule a short vacation to Wrightsville Beach adjacent to Wilmington in early November - we should be fine - still worried about what is happening in Morehead City/Beaufort, our most recent visit to the NC coast, and I cannot imagine what may have happened to the undersea archeologic site of the Queen Anne's Revenge area - Dave :(

Water street is certainly appropriately named. I hope the recovery doesn't take too long.

Water Street (as expected) is right on the dock area of the Cape Fear River - pic below shows the tour boat and the dock at regular water levels (same building in the background) - this storm set a number of surge rise records along the coastal rivers, including the Cape Fear River @ Wilmington - over 4 ft (assume above high tide) - previous record was 3.47 ft during Hurricane Hazel, 1954 (Source) - Wrightsville Beach where we will be staying in early November seems to have escaped any serious damage or water surge issues - will check tomorrow. Dave :)

Bomb Squad called in after Civil War cannon balls found on Folly Beach!

For 3-4 days now, I've been mesmerized by the Weather Channel covering the devastating Matthew Hurricane - so many places that Susan & I visit multiple times each year have been drastically impacted by this storm w/ severe destruction, i.e. trees down, power out, houses damaged, marinas destroyed, etc. There are areas in a number of my travelogues that still have not been assessed by the weather people because no one is yet allowed to return, especially to the barrier islands.

BUT, an interesting find on
Folly Beach - apparently the storm's beach erosion 'un-earthed' Civil War ordnance, i.e. cannon balls that are likely to be detonated if their fuses/powder are still intact! Folly Beach is the Atlantic beach locale for folks in Charleston, SC (others are Sullivan's Island & Isle of Palms) - below the first pic showing the relationship of Folly Beach to the city - also added the 'Kiawah Island' label, a place Susan & I visit almost yearly and that I've discussed in previous posts - final pics showing the rusted cannon balls - pretty cool what 'beach erosion' might discover? Dave :)

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office bomb squad has responded to Folly Beach after a man discovered Civil War cannon balls on the coast. Officials with the sheriff's office say the bomb squad is on East Ashley Avenue to evaluate the discovery of what appears to be an old Civil War ordnance that surfaced during Hurricane Matthew. A man says he was taking pictures along the beach at 8 a.m. when he spotted what appeared to be 12 to 15 rusted cannon balls near the Coast Guard station.

CCSO authorities say the ordnance is located several yards on the beach portion of Folly Beach near the end of East Ashley Avenue. Pictures show a group of rusted cannon balls along the beach as well as emergency personnel responding. "Our technicians are unable to access the ordinance at this time due to the approaching high tide," CCSO officials said."Once the tide has receded, our EOD technicians will evaluate the stability of the ordinance and render it safe, if necessary. The pubic or the media will not be allowed to access this area until this operation is completed."

The sheriff's office say the process will not pose any immediate threat to the residents or the community. "However, if the ordnance have to be rendered safe, residents in Charleston, James Island, and on Folly Beach will hear what will sound like an explosion," authorities said (Source).
