Oh Johanna! You are just showing off NOW! And shoving my face in it to boot! :D Just kidding, I hope'd you would know already. It seems it is TRUE! YOU are incapable of taking anything but a magical photo in that lovely, magical land you call home! One more thing, those last two symbols you wrote about what grapevine posts...is one a vowel and one a consonant? I so look forward to talking to you on Skype! More to hear your laugh than ANYTHING else ! :D ;)
What do you mean by edited ? What app do you use? If that's how it is edited!
Peace begins with a smile. :)

What for? Do you know what kind of wood that is? I like the bark on it!

Hey Dave. I just zoomed as far as I could into Johanna's pile of vineyard posts. That close up it seems like that pile is made up of different kinds of wood! If you zoomed in as far as you can, notice the third layer of horizontal posts! That one looks a bit like birch bark to me. But I am just a beginner in learning to recognize what woods are what! I would be interested in your opinion. When I worked making Ash furniture, fist it had to be seasoned. Then I had to used a blend of oils and hold the wood to a automated brass brush. The smaller stuff was harder to work with but necessary to become parts of the back of chairs. Oh, I forgot once they were seasoned they were then put in that bath of mixtures oils, resins etc.
My favorite piece was the bed we made! Wish I had taken photos. It is usually called "willow furniture " over here, I think. I will have to do sme checking! Cheers Diane.

Hi Diane - well, I went back and did zoom in on the lumber pile and indeed the barks look different, but still not sure about the types of trees; guess I'm not a 'Bark Man' - usually buy my 'good' hardwoods as UPS bundles from Steve Wall Lumber in Mayodan, NC (about 2 hrs from me). BUT, out of curiosity I checked out various web sites (one HERE) to see what trees did grow in Austria - quote below indicates a large percentage of conifers & spruce w/ hardwoods making up a smaller percentage, especially as pure deciduous stands - does not help much in deciding on those stacked posts - sorry. Dave :)

Tree species composition:

Austria’s forests are characterised by a high share of conifers. According to the Austrian Forest Inventory, there are currently 2 255 000 hectares of conifer stands, i.e. a share of 66, 8 %. The share of deciduous stands is 23,9 % or 802 000 ha. The remaining 9,3% productive forest surface consists of blanks, gaps and shrubs.

The shares in forest area (in percent) by mix types are: pure conifer stands 62 %, pure spruce stands 41 %, mixed conifer & deciduous stands 15 %, mixed deciduous & conifer stands 11% and pure deciduous stands 12 %.

Please don't be sorry! Thank you TONS for the site link! And also explains how you get your wood! I have never heard of anything like that option in Canada! You gave me a ton of great information.
Oh, ya, I wanted to ask you about the candles and holder! I have always been attracted to those ( I don't want to butcher that word ) menorahs. I know that traditional ones go up from either side to the last candle. In your picture of the gorgeous one you now use, I would LOVE to know when the candle ( that looks like it sits in a toe to me ) gets lit? Is it the first one because it is the lowest or doesn't that count, or put in another way, is it still important to light the highest one first? Thanks again for attending to my curious mind as well as my unending curiosity! Cyber hugs coming your way! Diane.

Hi again Diane - just brought that previous pic of our menorah forward; now not my heritage keep in mind, but on the first day, I will put one candle on the top (start on the left) and a candle in the lower holder, the latter is called the shamash (helper or servant) which is used to light the other candles; so I'll light the latter one first, then light the top candles; for each of the eight days, a new 'shamash' plus an additional candle added (the image below shows the last day).

We use these candles which come in a triangular container and number 45 to the box; each is hand-dipped and hand-decorated - best of all, when burning little smoke is produced & the wax is nearly all consumed - hot water cleans the tops easily from this menorah (which simply screw off).

Second image (click please) added is Susan's collection of other menorahs that we've bought over the years - on a display shelf in our living room - Dave :)

Oh, I JUST LOVE THEM ALL! I had an inkling that lower one was to light the others. Does every menorah have a helper candle place? Or better said, is there a place for the helper candle in every menorah? Did you collect these from different countries that you guy travelled to or did you get them near home?
The one on the left of the top shelf looks like a fish!

They're both vowels. The first one is a kind of o, the other one sort of an e (not spoken like e in English).

The app I use for editing is called Snapseed. I use it to enhance/crop/straighten photos (not always, sometimes).

Well, the menorahs are beautiful - surprised that I've not received a couple of likes - oh, well - BUT, for the 'lighter' candle, there seems to be no tradition as to its location, e.g. w/ the Fish design, the helper would be @ the right end; for the cut glass one likely in the middle; for the 'pottery' one (lower right), on the bottom right; and for the last, top middle - SO, no pattern @ all - just plenty of design options and hundreds available all looking different.

All of these menorahs were bought in our travels in the southeast USA - believe that the one we use every year was from a catalog online (check HERE for those who may be interested) - the artist in the link is Sandra Kravitz - believe there are several parts (i.e. main body, base, and holders) w/ molten metal poured into a mold - most is then silver-plated, while the candle holders are gold-plated - it is indeed beautiful, especially w/ the blue-white candles used, and easy to clean w/ boiling water - Dave :)

I'm slow to day. ;)

LOL! :D Ya know, I have not looked @ these in a while (we rarely use the living room), but when Diane ask about menorahs, I took a few images earlier today, did a little photo editing, and thought the collection rather nice, so decided to post - :) Dave P.S. thanks for the like!
