Generally, long term data contracts are only beneficial if you're purchasing a mobile device through a carrier, and the price you pay for the device is subsidized by the service provider.

If you have a smart phone - ask your service provider about tethering. If available it's often a nominal fee of $10-$15 a month on-top-of your phone plan. Way cheaper than carrying separate data accounts for (2) devices.
