I suppose I couldn't believe that, after Steve Jobs made such a big deal of iCloud a couple of years ago, that the iPad wouldn't have an easy way to access it.

Actually, you can. Just use a browser that you can change the identity on, Atomic Web for example, and identify it as a desktop.
