Not sure since when but now when I highlight a word in iBook, I do not see the "dictionary" option anymore! All I can do now if the choose search and then select "web" or "wiki" under the search option which then leads me to the browser. This long-winded way is of course not as fast and user-friendly as directly choosing the "dictionary" option which I remember using when I was reading with iBooks sometime ago...

Can anyone please teach me how to get the iBooks dictionary option back on?

Many thanks in advance.

I can't think of any reason it should have stopped working. Try the usual fixes and see if one of them helps.

Close/Clear the app: With the problem app closed, double tap on the Home button to get the multitask bar. Tap and hold on any icon in the bar until they jiggle, then tap the minus sign on the problem app. This will remove it from RAM and insure a clean start the next time you launch the app.

If that does not work try a restart,

Restart: Hold down the power button until the power off slider appears. Slide it off. When the iPad finishes shutting down, hold down the power button again until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends you restart the iPad at least once a month.

and then a reset if that does not work.

Reset: Hold down the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears. The iPad will reboot. This usually takes a bit longer than a restart.

Try going to Settings > General > Accessibility and turning off Speak Selection.

It's helped with some similar problems in iBooks.

Turning off speak option resolved the problem perfectly. But sometimes I need to hear how to speak a word I wish I won't have to choose between both
Thank you

I think it is a bug, either in iBooks or in iOS itself. All I can recommend is to give it another try after any iBooks update or system update and see what happens. You could also leave a response on Apple's feedback page if you like. That might help, eventually.

And I would not trust the pronunciation of the Speak function too much. Text to speech has a tendency to make mistakes, and if not complete mistakes then often gets the emphasis and tone wrong.

I use the dictionary app WordBook XL. A real human is used to record the proper pronunciation. Many of the dictionary apps have this feature.
