Under the Settings/General/ Messages section do you have an Apple ID registered? If not that's the reason.
Also under that section you can add additional email addresses that can refer to the Apple ID.

Hello.. I'm having same problem between my ipad2 and my daughters iPod both running 5.0 and we both have our emails aka apple id in the settings area and we are unable to send each other messages.. Claims contact is not registered?
