Am a new user who has never downloaded a book. I would like to know the method of downloading a free ebook (epub format) from a free site like Project Gutenberg and read it on my iPad mini retina (ios 7 upgraded).

I understand the Mini will read the epub format with no additional apps, but am at a loss as to the method downloading to enable me to read the book.

You can read a Project Gutenberg book right in the Safari browser. But, I find it's easier to download the ePub to the iPad.

When you find an ePub book you want to read, tap on the ePub link. You will get a new page where you are offered to open the ePub. See this for what I got when I elected to open an ePub e-book:

Any app you have on the iPad that can/will open an ePub will be offered for you to select. I usually use iBooks, which is a free download.

Then, once the app opens, you can start reading.
