How does imessage work, Who do I send it to?

bonna sound really dump I know but I cannot work out how to send imessages? Who do I send it to? Tried sending from my 3g ipad to my iphone both running IOS5 no luck, Each has a unique email and a unique mobile number but whatever I try the other one fails to deliver it. What id do I send it to or number?
