I'm a stay at home mom of 3 great kids. My oldest is 8yrs, my second is 3yrs and my baby is 9 months old! I joined this form because I've been having trouble getting my oldest sons iPad 1 set up with useful apps for special needs kids. All the apps require 4.3 or higher ios and this only has a 3.2!! I have been trying to download the next ios but I am doing something wrong because Safari won't let me? If anyone out there can help me that would be great! I should mention that I'm a bit rusty with my computer skills :) Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Good to "see" y)u and I hope you enjoy your visits.

You don't upgrade the operating system (iOS) on the iPad via Safari (or any other browser for that matter) - you use iTunes. So, connect the iPad to the most recent version of iTunes (you can make sure it's updated by going to the Apple website and checking to see if you have the latest version on your computer).

Then, make a backup of your iPad. After that prep work is done, select the "Restore" button on the main Summary tab. Allow iTunes to upgrade your iOS. When it's done, you'll be able to restore using the backup you made at the start of this process.

After all that, you will have an iPad1 running the most current iOS (5.1.1) and so you will be able to get those apps. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Jills...welcome!! In order to update your iPad-you will need to physically connect it to iTunes from your computer. Before even doing that though, your iTunes will also need to be updated as well.

So first open iTunes. It will Prompt you to the newest version. Press yes to update. If you don't get this prompt, go under Preferences and check for updates there.

Back up any photos or data to other sources, like emailing it to yourself.

Once your iTunes is updated, than you can connect your iPad to your computer.

See this thread, though this was first posted last October. Since than there has been 2 more updates to 5.1.1. http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-help/49411-ios-5-5-0-1-upgrade-troubleshooting.html

Good luck. It's a lengthy process so be patient. In addition, many have said that their ipad1 have slowed down considerably because of the update partly because of the hardware and RAM that the ipad1 has versus the iPad 2.

Plug the iPad into your computer. Open iTunes. Make a backup by clicking "Sync". Once the backup is complete, click "check for update". It should prompt you to download updates for iOS. Click yes. Let the update download, install, and sync over to the iPad. I'm not sure how well iOS 5 will work on the iPad 1. It might be a little slow; if it turns out to be unbearably sluggish and unusable, connect it to iTunes, click "Restore", select "restore from a backup."
Hope this helps!
