Help with putting films etc.. onto ipad

hi guys,
i was just wondering if you could help me out. I've been trying to put mostof the 8th season of family guy onto my ipad, but its just not letting me, or i am just doing it wrong, i am not sure.

how do i get stuff onto my ipad via itunes without having to purchase anything from itunes?.

Most times you have to convert them first.
