Hi Kelly, welcome!
There are a lot of apps being able to - some sort of- open and edit word and excel. Some better, some not as good, some paid, some for free. I actually paid some money to get a better one and I am pretty satisfied with it. Meanwhile I do see the free ones not so much as valuable tools/apps, though lots of them are nice but rather for playing around.
Sorry, but having my (paid) Quickoffice HD I do not look anymore for free apps of that kind.

But I am sure someone else here will be able to give an advice!

Hi Kelly,

There are many members that can help you find the right app for your Word and Spreadsheets. I am not sure if there are any free apps that do a satisfactory job, however, there are several including: pages, numbers and Goodreader (to read PDF, and other .extension files). See this link from a forum search I did: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-apps/1497-best-apps-working-pdf-excel-word-files.html

If you have not already, please take a moment to download the lasted iPad Manual User Guide iOS 5. This is extremely helpful if you are new to the iPad world. http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf

I'm using DocsToGo premium. Combined with Evernote and it's solid. Excel, Word and PP access with zero issues. Gotta pay to play. Free is free for a reason.
