I just purchased an I Pad and am wondering how to close doen an app. I am also new to Apple since all my work/entertainment is on a PC

Double tab the home button. On the bottom there will be a panel of apps press and hold the app icon - there will be a minus sign in the top left of the icon - hit that and the app is closed.
