Blizzard Entertainment has been very busy at PAX East this past weekend, announcing and demoing a new iPad card battling game, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. The new, cross-platform game will also be available on Windows PCs and Macs, and will be free-to-play. Gameplay involves players building card decks that are centered around one of nine iconic Warcraft character classes, and then duelling each other for the chance to win awesome new cards.

“We’ve always loved collectible card games at Blizzard, so it’s been exciting to bring everything we love about the genre to life in Hearthstone,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re putting a lot of focus into creating a fun new game that’s easy to pick up and play, but also has a lot of depth. We can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

Blizzard says that the game will be simple, but engaging, and will be instantly accessible to all players, be they Warcraft novices or veterans. Available modes include practice matches against the computer, a mode where you can duel against your friends via Battle.net, and two competitive modes, Play Mode and The Forge. In Play Mode, you get to play traditional head-to-head card battles, facing off against opponents and trying to increase their medal tally and earn card packs. In The Forge, players start each match by building a deck from a new set of cards, and then duelling other Forge participants with the deck that they’ve built. New card packs will also be available to purchase in-app, and overall in the game there will be hundreds of cards available, featuring lots of different Warcraft spells, weapons and characters, so there will be limitless possibilities for players to develop and fine-tune their deck-building strategies.
