Headphones DO only have one jack, as a rule.

The iPad does not operate as a cell phone and I doubt that the functions can be combined on it.

I've tested a headset in my iPad using Skype and it worked fine. The headset has one jack with an extra ring for the mic.

The specs only identified the iPad jack as stereo, but it does work with a headset jack that has that extra ring.
