Hey,

sometimes you find materials in the newspaper, but those papers are rare and you have to buy real quick when you see them.
The other way is by farming. When you collect produced goods from your farm, every now and then an item pops up. Might be building materials, cuttings or explosives.

Seems like you are quite new to the game. When you have a slightly bigger silo, there is a method to get more materials by planting wheat. Each time (more or less) you collect the wheat, you are rewarded with an item.

Oh, and the red toolboxes may contain materials, but the don't open very often.
