Click the boat icon, same way as if you finish a boat and send it off. Just as long as you don't fill the crate or flag for help, you can cast off empty.

Try turning your phone/iPod on and off, that's what I have to do when it's not working

Click the boat icon, same way as if you finish a boat and send it off. Just as long as you don't fill the crate or flag for help, you can cast off empty.

You have to press the same button you press when sending away a full boat, except you MUST do it before you've filled or opened any of the crates.
