No he will not be free. You pay gems for him again, usually 47 games for 3 days and upwards, but it has differed with different people, some have reported that they've only needed to pay 30-odd gems for 3 days.

I have personally never used him apart from the trial period everyone got for free x

I've hired him twice now, but only to help with various achievements.. I can't imagine ill require his services again!!

Used him for the free trial and there's no way I would pay 47 diamonds to use him again. I don't think he's worth it for 3 days - (and not really 3 full days considering you have to sleep and so does he) I did fine without him for 44 levels.

I hired him while doing the boat achievement. I may hire him again if I save enough diamonds but only because I really don't have anything else I need my diamonds for.
