empty.. yes!
partially filled... no!

there's a cast away option (the one you click to send your boat when it's complete) but only when it's empty you can cast it away.

You can only cast empty boats upon arrival. Just click the boat icon and you will have the option to cast off or fill... Only empty boats can be cast off. If you fill or ask helpmfor crates, you need to fill everything or wait until it sail by itself...
