Save for other machines. Mine isn't worth it unless you have all the smelters ready to use. Is your dock open yet? Do dock first before mine.

It is worth it, but I don't think you have to rush it.
In the mine, you can get ore (by using tnt, dynamite or shovels). Smelters make bars out of the ore. And the bars are mainly needed for jewlery, which you get at level 38. Using them on board orders is considerd a waste by many farmers. Since the jewlery maker uses the bars quickly, while they take long to make, you shouldn't open the mine too late, though.
