MacStories reports that the really cool glasses-free monocular Head-Coupled Perspective 3D demo that was doing the rounds in April has been turned into a free iOS app called i3D, by the makers of the demo, Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay from the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble. The demo, which was based on Johnny Lee’s 2007 Nintendo Wii demo, according to MacStories, used the iPad 2's front-facing camera to track the user’s head movement to create 3D animation on screen. The initial video (see above) caused a sensation on YouTube, where it clocked up over 1.5 million views. The app features all the demos as seen in the video, and is also compatible with the iPhone 4 and 4th generation iPod touch. Needless to say, original iPad owners are out of luck as the app requires a front-facing camera to work.
