flashing screen

I was given my ipad in Sept as birthday present. No problems until now... and now the screen keeps flashing and I cant turn it on. I cant access my serial number because I cant turn the ipad on! Any ideas please?

The serial can be found on the back of the device and on iTunes when the device is plugged in.

Thanks. I think I'll start using this instead of my overly long 'usual fixes' paste-and-post. It covers all that, and a bit more. Or maybe I'll just append the link.
