download a DVD

whats the easiest way of ripping a DVD? tried Handbrake, keeps closing, is there an easier way?

DVDShrink works very well. (google it) There are some disks it can't seem to read.

From there, you need to either convert it to H.264 format using handbrake or...you can load it directly and watch it using Cinexplayer or VLC.
