I bought a used iPad 2, 64gb. It would never authenticate, so I tried to restore it. It only restores about 60%, then gets stuck. I've tried the DFU mode and downloading the latest software version -- 7.0.4. -- With the Wifi Only, Wifi Only-Hardware Revision A, and CDMA versions, iTunes says that "The iPad could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." And the GSM version says "iTunes will erase and restore your iPad to iOS 7.0.4 and will verify the restore with Apple." I'm using iTunes 11.1.3.8. I wanted to see if I should restore to the GSM version, and/or if there is anything else I need to do to get the iPad to work. Thanks.

The part I bolded IS the outcome you want - a fresh out-of-the-box iOS 7.0.4 running iPad2. So, yes, you do want to restore that GSM version as it appears that is the version of iPad you have.

Then, once it's restored, you can start using it as if it were new (cause it will be ... to you).

Good luck and let us know how your get on.

Thanks for your reply. I tried the restore to the GSM 7.0.4 version, but it still stopped. It stops with the Apple on the iPad 2 screen and a bar under it that is about 60% complete--and iTunes says "Restoring iPad firmware." Is there anything I can do to get the iPad to finish restoring? Thanks.

How long do you wait? It does take time to install a new firmware....

I waited for a very long time. The iPad2 went back to the screen showing the picture of connecting to iTunes, and iTunes gave an error message saying "the iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred"--and one time the code was (1) and the next time it was (3004). I downloaded the firmware to my pc computer and used the Shift key when pressing Restore so I could use the firmware I had downloaded, but this is what happened. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks.
