Bluetooth keyboards aren't allowed to use spell check?!?

It boggles the mind that Apple is on their 3rd generation of iPad and they still aren't allowing bluetooth keyboards to work along with spell check.

Is anyone aware of a work-around?

I think your getting spell check confused with Auto Suggest? This is for the onscreen keyboard because of how easy it is to make typos, it assists in suggesting the word you might be looking for. It is not spell checking your work. Individual apps may have spell check, but it is not associated with the keyboard in any way.

As far i know there is not such facility with bluetooth keyboard. You have to use others app for this function. But the other thing you can do in your iPad that go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Auto-correction, make it ON. It will help for misspelling.
