The BBC has today launched its iPad News app in the UK, as well as an iPhone app. According to a report on BBC News' own site about the apps, although they had already been launched worldwide in April 2010, the UK launch was delayed while the BBC Trust, which governs the BBC, assessed the apps and how they would impact the rest of the industry. The BBC Trust eventually ruled that the iPad and iPhone apps do not "represent a significant change to the BBC's exisiting public services" and could therefore finally be released in the UK.
The app, which is available as a free download from the iPad App Store, delivers breaking news from the BBC and its global network of journalists, with stories divided into categories such as Top Stories, UK News, and World News. It also offers video clips embedded in news stories, an "Edit" menu to enable you to choose the news that interests you most, and the ability to share news stories via email, Facebook and Twitter.
The report states that apps for BBC Sport and the popular BBC iPlayer are "coming soon".
