According to a news story on Journalism.co.uk, the BBC is currently developing its own iPhone/iPad app that will enable its journalists to file video reports, as well as pictures and audio, directly into the BBC system when out in the field. According to the report , the app will be based around existing software that the BBC already uses for its journalists, and it should be available within a month. Journalism.co.uk says that the BBC also plans to get iPhone licences for the Luci Live app, so that its reporters can broadcast live to air from their iPhones via 3G.

“Reporters have been using smartphones for a while now but it was never good quality. You might do it when there was a really important story,†Martin Turner, head of operations for newsgathering at the BBC told Journalism.co.uk. “Now it is beginning to be a realistic possibility to use iPhones and other devices for live reporting, and in the end if you’ve got someone on the scene then you want to be able to use them.â€

Turner added that costs for the project would be kept to a minimum, an important consideration for the publicly funded broadcaster.
