BBC launches iPlayer Kids iPad.JPG

MacRumors reports that the BBC has today launched a new iOS iPlayer Kids app that is aimed at children. The family-friendly app has been designed to enable children to safely watch the BBC’s CBeebies and CBBC shows without parents worrying about what else they might be looking at on the app.

The app provides access to over 10,000 shows and can accommodate up to four profiles being created on one device so that each child can have their own profile with their own tailored content. Parents can set up each profile by selecting the child’s age and a character avatar, which will then provide access to pre-school programs or programs for children over 5 years of age.

It also features a parental control lock so that the app cannot be used to access other links, apps, or settings.

The content can either be downloaded over Wi-Fi or streamed, and will be available to stream or download for 30 days.

Here’s what Alice Webb, director of BBC Children’s had to say about the app:

The BBC iPlayer Kids app meets the needs we know are absolute deal breakers for kids and parents. We’re offering choice and control, wrapped up in a child-friendly design and the largest range of home-grown UK content on a platform parents can trust.

The app is available to download for free in the UK (no word as yet as to whether or not it will be available eventually in other territories), and has neither adverts nor in-app purchases.
