BAckup / Sync trying to update with IOS 5.1

I am trying to update my new IPad 2 with IOS 5.1, through my laptop. I have updated Itunes to the latest version, but my laptop has been backing up for over 6 hours not can anyone offer any advice. Will it ever complete the backup?
