Should the iPad play the above??. It doesn't seem to be at the moment

The specs say it will play .avi, but each file format is capable of a wider range of settings than the iPad can handle. So yes, it should play .avi files, with qualifications. Here are the specs, which I don't pretend to understand.

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format. -- from Apple's iPad spec site.

You may have better luck with a third party app like OPlayer, but no guarantees.

Try playimg the video in itunes on your pc. If it works, then it should work on your ipad

Or you could convert the file using handbrake
