Apple Id not correct on iPad

I have an iPad 1 and upgraded to iOS5. With that came iCloud. When I tried to log on to iCloude it didn't like my Apple ID because it wasn't an email address. So I changed my Apple ID and password to be an email address. But now when I try to update my apps on the iPad my Apple ID is still coming up at the old one. How do I get it to be the new email address?
