AirDrop isn't available on iPad 3, only iPad 4 and mini.

How do I know what iPad I've got? I there a way to tell by the model number?

Damn! I guess it's time for a new iPad.

Keep in mind that it only shares pictures, ... with an iDevice which also supports AirDrop. So if there's nobody around you who can use it, there's no need to "upgrade" at the moment.
