Why doesnt ipad show under devices on mac laptop

I want to move my avi movies onto my ipad but it seems like they only want us to watch movies from itunes

iPad has no native support for avi files. It can support mp4 and m4v and mov files, and maybe a few others. They don't have to come from iTunes, either. If you want to play avi files, then get a third party player app. AVPlayerHD is but one very good option and there are many others. Search the App Store.

Thanks. Do u know why I can't see my ipad under devices when I plug it into my laptop? That's usually how I move files around but I can only open it in itunes
