Why can't I get sound from news apps when it works from music and movies?

It's usually the case that you've accidentally activated the Mute function. Although this is only supposed to affect system sounds - such as 'new email' - in fact many apps use it to mute the entire sound from an app. So check to see if you've accidentally activated it - either from the hard switch by the side of the volume control or the soft switch at the far left of the multi-task bar - one or other (but not both) of these can activate the mute function, selectable in the 'Settings' menu.
