Router question

I plan on purchasing a Linksys router for my iPad but I am perplexed as to how this will work with the internet I currently have. I have Xfinity and it runs with a modem. How do I use the wireless router in conjunction with my internet or do I have to do it separately? I am so challenged when it comes to this stuff it is embarrassing.
