Public WiFi security

My wireless network at home is encrypted as is that at my office, but if I am sitting in a Starbucks I am wondering how much I should worry....
Did a search on the subject and learned about wise behavior (do not do banking, etc), and also read about a "software VPN"
There seem to be several options, some free, some quite expensive

Advice as always is welcome and appreciated

But I don't do anything of a "sensitive" nature away from home. Besides, with the economy the way it is today, who can afford Starbucks??
