Previous OS possible

I have a HP 6500 printer I was using print center and it worked very well
all apps found my printer
I upgraded the OS (with air print) and now have to be in print center in order
to print
Can I go back to the older OS so I can use my printer like before

It's also possible you've undated PrintCentral, since that app no longer has the ability to print in the background. I believe Print N Share by the same developer can still be used in the background.

I contacted print center they said they said apple the OS changed it so
print center had to be used as a stand alone program
I'll contact them again and check out print n share
