Realise that the speaker on the IPad 4 outputs in mono only but if I connect headphones either using a cable or Bluetooth does it output the sound in stereo?

If the sound was recorded in stereo, then yes, you will hear it as stereo when using your headphones of either type.

Your iPad may work like the iPhone 4S. I know that the iPhone 4S is capable of either Mono or a Stereo output, assuming your highly similar iPad will do the same. For example, Apple users can enable mono output on their device to help facilitate the hearing impaired hear the full audio signal, as opposed to some particular sounds stronger or weaker in one ear. You may access this audio output function by, Tapping the SETTINGS ICON on the HOME SCREEN, and tapping GENERAL to scroll down to ACCESSIBILITY. In the accessibility window scroll down and tap the MONO Audio ON/OFF toggle switch to enable or disable the feature. Just a note; the iPad device should already be in Stereo Mode by default, so yes, you are able to have your output in Mono or Stereo. Your Choice! Let me know if I can help assist you anymore.

Thanks. Yes all my music is in stereo and I am expecting a pair of new Bluetooth stereo headphones in next day or so.

Thanks Tanveers. Have checked the settings and ensured that mono option is off so when I connect headphones should get stereo sound.

Hello & welcome to the forum! :) I believe that the iPad has several speakers, so the audible output should be 2-channel sound (although the physical arrangement probably projects more as mono) - Info HERE. The headphone jack requires a 3.5 mm stereo mini plug as shown below, so YES output from the jack is stereo; the same applies to 'wireless' speakers (I use a set when traveling).

NOW, by going into Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing, 'Mono Audio' can be selected and channel split altered to the right or left one - Dave

P.S. Sorry guys - my posting took longer and several beat me to the punch - hope all of the info helps the OP!

Only the iPad mini has stereo speakers. All other iPads have one speaker only.

Exactly the reason I want to use headphones. May get an external speaker later as well.
