There isn't a application to open Microsoft word files without lose formatting. Why Microsoft doesn't do anything to change this?

That's mostly the reason I'm opting to not create or work on my files natively; I'll be using a remote desktop app to access my home computer where I store all my files.

Documents To Go is your friend, although formatting will never be 100% accurate compared to the desktop.

And the reason Microsoft don't do much about it is becasue it's and Apple device with an Apple OS! You won't see many Apple applications created for Windows Phone 7 either, surprise surprise... :D

Not to mention that it would take a complete re-write of the Office applications to make them work (even with limits) on the iPad. It would be a bit like trying to shove an elephant into a hamster cage.

Microsoft does offer it's web apps. Maybe someday they'll make them work right with the iPad. That is a far more likely and reasonable solution.
