Laptop not recognizing ipad

Hi everyone! I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

Normally when I hook up my ipad to my laptop, itunes starts up and tries to sync. Now, it doesn't even see my ipad. I want to download the new os version, but I don't know how to get it to check for updates. I'm so frustrated! Also, when I hit my sleep button on my ipad, the keyboard appears! Whats going on? Anyone know? I'd appreciate any help/insight!

I think there is a bug in the latest iTunes. I had the same thing. Make sure your iTunes is up to date. If the computer doesn't give the windows "found new hardware" beep, unplug the iPad dock connector, reboot, then try again. Oh, and make sure you are using only the original apple cable.

well, I kept plugging it in, and disconnecting, rebooting, etc. I even changed which USB on my laptop was plugged in. Evenually it found it. Thanks for your help.
