You have a cabled and a 'wireless' option - 1) Cabled choice is an HDMI adapter which connects the iPad to an HDMI input on your HDTV (see image below for the older 30-pin adapter - the black cable is the HDMI to the TV while the other provides power to the iPad; a 'lightning' adapter is also available depending on the iPad model); and 2) Wireless choice is 'mirroring' using an Apple TV (like a Roku device) - the Apple product supports AirPlay (see HERE) which is the proprietary technology are allows the iPad to be mirrored to the TV.
