I never expected that the resolution of a portable device would exceed the resolution of desktop monitors. With the display resolution of the iPad, I feel as though the desktop resolution is lagging behind. Since iPad is on the market, it seems only logical that rest of the new releases of computers will sport higher resolution monitors for their desktops and laptops. Now that I hold a 3rd generation iPad, I don't think I will buy another monitor that has the same resolution as a TV.

Hold in mind it will probably be a while before we see large monitor with similar dpi. The difficulty of making (and therefore the cost) a retina display goes up dramatically with size. That's why it was first introduced on the iPhone and it's relatively small screen.
