Earthquake, 5.1 Magnitude Strikes Near Sparta, North Carolina!

In bed this morning and just after 8 AM, the house had a 'mild shake' - earthquake near Sparta, NC (northeast corner of the state - about a 90 min drive for us in Winston Salem) - minor damage near the epicenter, i.e. objects falling from shelves, as shown below. For those interested and living nearby, more information HERE. Dave :)

(CNN)A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit about 2 miles from the town of Sparta, North Carolina, early Sunday, along the state's border with Virginia, according to the preliminary report from the US Geological Survey.

It's the strongest quake to shake the state since 1926, according to the North Carolina Geological Survey.
The quake, whose epicenter is in Alleghany County, was felt as far away as South Carolina and Georgia, according to social media posts. The USGS received reports from more than 300 miles away, in Atlanta.

It struck about 8:07 a.m. ET. (Source)

North Carolina Earthquake Yesterday - Followup - More Damage Than Expected!

Well, I wasn't planning an additional post, but the quake was felt north of Pittsburgh and south of Atlanta (see map below - both pics from an article this morning in our local paper). Plus, there was more damage than expected around the epicenter - objects falling from shelves was the least concern, a number of houses have been structurally damaged necessitating the residents to move out and some roads have shown major cracks and pavement separation - this will be more costly than expected - more information HERE for those interested. Dave

P.S. this was the highest magnitude quake in North Carolina since 1916, i.e. in the midst of the Great War, which was coincidentally followed by the 1918 Flu Pandemic!
