My ipad isn't new, so I wont have coverage if anything were to happen to it.

But i know of a friend who's pretty techie, so maybe he'll know what to do if some were to happen

That is so sad. If you make an appointment with Apple Genius Bar they may offer to swap it out but at a cost.
