how to recover all date from a failed ios7.1.1 upgrade?

Today I tried to upgrade to IOS 7.1.1 on my Ipad3 but I failed, my Ipad kept showing a "Itune" icon and a USB cord beneath it, I now want to recover all the data I had in my Ipad, I tried to connect it to Itune but it showed I had to restore for the update, Can anyone tell me how I can retrieve my old data as they are really important to me! Thanks a lot !

First, restart your iPad. This should take you out of recovery mode, and then you should be able to backup and restore it.

To restart: turn it off, wait for a few minutes, turn it on again.

Thanks, Johanna, But I don't want it to be restored to factory settings, the old document and files in my Ipad are very important to me.

I couldn't do back-up now as there is nowhere I can click on to back up on either Itune or Ipad, do you mean I can still back up after I restore to factory setting?

I turned it off and turn it back on again but on my Ipad it still shows an "Itune icon" with USB cord beneath it, which means I couldn't go into normal mode on my Ipad

If this gets your device out of recovery mode (no Apple logo with iTunes sign and cable), you can connect your iPad to the computer and back it up this way: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Then use iTunes to restore it to the latest software version.

If you can't get it out of recovery mode, you'll have to use these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If you don't have a recent backup, the data will be gone, sorry!

Btw: recently, the latest iOS is 7.1.2 - this version was released yesterday.

Search for "iPad data recovery" using a browser, there'll be quite a few results (software) which could help you retrieve the lost data.

This is going to be a game of guesses. Some days ago, the exact same thing had happened with me, without any intentional step from my part. Your iPad has gone into recovery mode. There is a slight chance that some unexpected thing made the iPad go into recovery mode, so a question for you :

Did you SWITCH OFF your iPad and then connect it to a PC, then while connecting it to the iPad, HOLD DOWN THE HOME BUTTON while connecting the USB to the iPhone (NOT THE PC)?

IF YES : Your device has been put into recovery mode and you can exit recovery mode by restarting your iPad or by leaving it undisturbed for 15 minutes.

IF NO : Not possible to predict what made it go into recovery mode. Probably some software or memory problem. In most cases, it does not exit recovery mode even after restarting. For me, I had to leave it undisturbed for 15 minutes.

See if these suggestions work or not.

CAUTION : If you have your iPad connected to your PC, please operate iTunes with great caution because there are options to restore your device, meaning all data will be erased and you have to restore from your last backup. So, if you didn't backup recently, its going to be trouble.
