I used to watch youtube videos everyday on my ipad2, it worked well until a few days ago.
I use the youtube apps, the search function is fine, and I can see thumbnail of the video fine, but when it started to load after a while it said "movie format not supported", and then the screen went black, i have to return to the home screen.
I tried it repeatedly with the same result, i also try to open it through safari /m.youtube, and encounter the same result, it's as if my ipad2 wont play any kind of video at all.
This really confuse me since a few days ago everything was fine, the "movie format" message does appear but very rarely, and if i try to re-load it would play.
I dont have any problem with cellular network, since i could use the internet just fine.
I try using google, but i can't find any solution to this problem, maybe someone here can help me?

Try on your computer. if it doesn't work, then there is a problem with your iPad, the YouTube app, or YouTube itself. Try restarting the ipad. It would help if you gave us the movie name and the account name of the uploader, I could try on my iPad.

I have just played that clip on YouTube, plays fine on my iPad give these steps a go:
Do the four finger swipe up or double tap your home button to reveal your multi task bar along the bottom. It will show all the apps that you have opened at one time or another. Long press one of these apps until they start to jiggle and red minus signs will appear above them all. Press all the minus signs, this will close them, not delete them. It's a good idea to do this regularly just to keep them all running smoothly, I do mine every night. Check and see if it is operating now. if not a restart is in order.

Restart: Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple logo appears, this will take a few seconds and your iPad will start again. You should restart your iPad occasionally also as it will keep it running smoothly. Now see if it is operating. If not a reset is the next step.

Reset: Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. This is a reset.

When your iPad begins to behave strangely these are the first steps you should do to rectify it. Let us know how you go, good luck!!

Hi, thanks for the info. I did both, but it still won't work. Perhaps I should visit the apple store and ask someone there.

I can't think of another reason why it would be like this, contacting Apple may just be the answer here.
Maybe someone else will chime in.

I have the same issue that some Youtube clips will play and some will not. I always assumed that it was because of the encoding and that some may be flash based.
The video that was mentioned above does play on my iPad though.

What browser are you using? If you use Atomic and set it to "identify as Internet Explorer X" it would cause this problem. Setting it back to "identify as iPad Safari" will solve it.

My I pad 2 is doing the exact same thing.....my sidekick cell phone did the same thing after the new one came out....it basically forced me to buy the upgraded one...maybe apple is doing the same thing with the iPad two since the three has come out. (description) my iPad worked fine. Gradually I wasn't able to view all videos on YouTube or even shameless to say porn..lol then it just stopped playing vids in general.....my iPad 2 is immaculate and has NEVER been dropped scratched or abused....I'm confused and I want to factory reset it but I want to make sure all of my info gets backed up...if your able to find a solution before 6/24/12 than hopefully I won't have to reset it. Thanks

This has happened to me before
All you have to do is reboot your iPad, after you turn it back on after rebooting, it's good as new ;)

Try forwarding the video a little from it's original position then wait a few seconds.
