Iwork is the apple program suite that says it can open word files and save them still as word files.
so it could be done but it wouldn't be pretty.
The screen is small and you would have to buy a keyboard 'cause you couldn't handle doing it with the onscreen keys. Only the letters show on the onscreen, you have to hit a number key to get numbers and symbols and it is very slow that way.
Flash drives do not connect to the ipad you have to get it from hooking to the computer or maybe by email
