    I had a similar challenge, and I used AVS editor before doing the conversion. With AVS video editor I was able to edit the movie... I hope this helps :)

    For PC users, try SUPER. It's pretty good:

    MPEG Streamclip is very good if you run OS X.

    It seems that all the converters are way slow. If I convert a movie and usually do it before going to bed and it will be done by morning.

    As far as free video converter: Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip, ffMPEGx, Visual Hub, VideoMonkey, ... ;; there are many out there, but not one is really the best for all, sometimes one has to use this one, and then one has to use that one.

    Ended up being an AnyDvd issue.

    Combination of dvd43 and handbrake seems to be the best and simplest way to get dvds onto the ipad.
