Is there a certain app that is crashing most often? If you go into "Settings----general---diagnostics & usage----" what does it tell you the reason for the crashing is? Mine most often is safari, specifically when viewing Facebook. My iPad says the crashing is due to low memory, I assume I run out of RAM processing visual and HTML content if I have left any apps open in the system tray(double click home button and see all your open apps, hit the minus signs to close them). This will help if the issue is memory. Or you might have a bad app, in which case, delete the problem app and try reinstalling it.

How do I bring up the minus signs on the apps to close them?

In the tray? They should come up when you double click the home button, then hold your finger on an app until they woggle and the minus signs come up. To delete apps by making them wiggle on your screens with minus signs, hold your finger on an app until they start wiggling, tap the minus sign, and it will ask you if you wat to delete...press okay/yes. Then reinstall.
Some apps won't let you delete them, like the ones Apple puts in as native apps in the OS(like safari or FaceTime). So even though they wiggle, you won't get the minus signs on the big screen. But in the tray, the minus sign means close app, not delete app.
