Bluetooth connection between Nokia N900 and iPad3

I couldn't make it. Is this a feature (like, Apple slowly phasing out BT support) or a bug? I switched Bluetooth on, both devices were discoverable (come to think of it, I have yet to see how to make iPad hidden as to its BT...), the relevant icons were rotating, but neither of the devices was able to find another device.
Of course my intentions were noble: to be able to share files (at least photos and music) between the two, and eventually also to use N900 as the 3G modem for iPad. Have I expected too much?
